RY1039-Dv. Sockeye Salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka), close-up of male in spawning colors. When sockeye leave the sea and enter freshwater to begin their final journey upriver to spawn and die, they undergo dramatic change. Silver bodies become red and green and they stop feeding. In males the snout transforms into a hooked beak and their teeth lengthen to become fangs, useful in fighting other males for mates. Adams River, British Columbia, Canada. Cropped to vertical from native horizontal format.<br />
