blue whale photos

TC0401-D. Blue Whale (Balaenoptera musculus), the largest animal living on earth. Historically, some grew to 110 feet long and 200 tons. Today, 85 feet and 100 tons is considered huge. Blue whales were hunted close to extinction until granted protection in the 1960s by which time some 400,000 had been killed. Some populations (e.g. the Antarctic stock) may never recover. The California subpopulation (est. 2,200), however, has nearly recovered to pre-whaling levels. Estimated worldwide population today is 15,000 to 20,000 whales. Pacific Ocean.<br />
